Two
new Rookies at Nine
The
members at Station 9 welcome two new Rookies to the station, Fire
Trainee Leslie Bates on A shift and Fire
Trainee Joshua Wise to B shift. Welcome
guys.
Two
fires for A shift
This
past tour was a busy one for A shift. In addition to the many EMS
calls, Box alarms, and other calls for service, 2 working fires were
run as well. The first fire was in 101's first due bringing Engine
109 2nd due and Rescue 109 as the First Special Service. Engine 101
arrived on the scene with a 5 story apartment building with smoke
showing from the cockloft. Engine 109 arrived and took the water and
went to the 5ht floor to stretch a 2nd line. The Rescue went to the
5th floor and opened up for Engine 101. Engine 109 forced the door
to the exposure apartment and helped 101 open up the fire apt. The
Rescue opened up the fire apt and check the apt. on the 4th floor.
The fire was contained to the wall and cockloft in the apt. Units
picked up and went in service. The cause of the fire is under investigation
by the Fire Marshal's office.
The
second fire was in 101's first due, again bringing the Engine and
Rescue from 9. Engine 101 arrived on scene with a 2 story duplex with
smoke showing from the 2nd floor. Engine 109 was second due picking
up 101's line. The Engine crew pulled a backup line and stood fast
at the bottom of the stairs. Rescue 109 went to the fire room and
opened up and conducted searches which were negative. Engine 101 put
a quick knock on the fire containing it to one room. Shortly after
command held 2 and 1 and released the rest. The units from 9 were
on scene for about an hour before returning.
Tree
Crushes Car after ice storm
Feb.
13th Engine and Medic 109 were dispatched for an accident with injuries.
En route ECC advised that they were getting reports of a tree that
had fallen on a car trapping 3. The assignment was upgraded to a rescue
assignment bring Rescue 109. Engine and Medic 109 arrived on the scene
to find a very large tree had fallen on a car crushing the roof in.
There were two still in the car but not trapped. One person was suffering
from a major head injury and the other person had minor injuries.
Both were removed from the car and the patient with the head injury
was transported to the Trauma center and the other was transported
to Arlington ER. Units went in service shortly after.

Cut
Job on I-395
Units
were dispatched to Southbound I-395 at Glebe Rd for a reported accident
with entrapment. Engine 109 was the first to arrive and confirmed
one trapped in the rear passenger seat. Rescue 109 and Truck 105 extricated
the patient in under 10 min. Medic 109 transported the patient to
the local Trauma center.

First
Due Fire
Station
109 “A” platoon was dispatched for a house fire in the
area of South 24th Street and Shirlington Road. Engine, Rescue and
Medic 109 responded. M109 who was returning from an earlier call was
first on the scene and reported smoke and fire showing from 2 sides
of the small single family dwelling. Engine 109 arrive next laid there
supply line and advanced a 200’ 1.75” hand-line to side
“A”, Rescue 109 arrived next and assisted with forcible
entry and primary utilities. Engine 109’s crew entered through
side “A” and initiated an aggressive attack but was pulled
quickly due to deteriorating conditions and the loss of some floor
area. Engine 109 along with Engine 101 quickly put a knock on the
fire through exterior windows. Engine 109 and Rescue 109 were allowed
to reenter and perform a primary search and start overhaul. One Firefighter
received minor burns and was treated and released from Arlington Hospital.

Promotions
Two
more from Station 9 have been promoted. Capt. Norman Clark has been
promoted to Captain II and has been transfered to 9C as the Hazmat
Commander. Ryan Leischner has been promted to Lieutenant and has been
transfered to 5B.
